Coraline Cat Trail: Descent
Project type
Sculpture, Painting, AR
Date
2024
Location
Portland Oregon
I was selected to paint a cat as part of The Coraline Cat Trail, which was a temporary public art installation in Portland, Oregon, that featured 31 large, hand-painted fiberglass cat sculptures inspired by the character Cat from LAIKA's 2009 film Coraline. Running from August to October 2024, the trail encouraged visitors to explore downtown Portland and culminated in an auction of the sculptures to benefit OHSU Doernbecher Children's Hospital.
Descent's design is inspired by the wildflowers in the Pacific Northwest, bold colors and shapes, and inviting play and investigation. The concept is to merge the real sculpture with a parallel AR world, inspired by the secret door and garden in Coraline. The audience can admire the sculpture painted with holographic glitter that refracts light and bold abstract flower shapes.
Scan a QR code to be invited to an augmented reality of strange flower shapes and rodents running around, accessible through your phone or ipad lens. As you investigate the AR world, flowers spin, bounce and make sounds.
